Dental cleanings versus periodontal cleanings in Glen Carbon
At Kellerman Dental in Glen Carbon, patients come in for various services, including teeth cleaning, oral exams, help with treating sore gums and cavities, and gum disease. Dental cleanings are slightly different from periodontal cleanings. Dental cleanings mainly clean the mouth of bacteria and prevent plaque and tartar from building up. We do this by scraping off plaque and tartar with a unique tool.
During periodontal cleaning, we use special instruments to get deep under the gums. These instruments get in places where regular brushes can’t. They help clean areas that are usually impossible to get to with a toothbrush. The purpose of periodontal cleaning is to try to save the teeth from gum disease. Periodontal cleanings can help relieve the swelling and inflammation that gum disease causes and allows the mouth to heal. And is done when there is severe gum loss or gum disease. Teeth cleaning in Glen Carbon is meant to remove food and debris from the gums’ deep pockets, where bacteria hide.
Teeth cleaning should be done at least once a year. Because our cleanings are thorough, most patients only need one every year, while others who have dental problems or gum disease may need two to three cleanings a year. A periodontal cleaning is done as required or to control gum disease. Sometimes four cleanings are done to rid all pockets of bacteria completely.

Dr. Kevin Kellerman is an alumnus of Pinckneyville Community High School, Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and SIUE School of Dental Medicine from where he obtained his doctorate.
A full-time dental practitioner, he also lectures on various topics. He is affiliated with many professional bodies including the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Orthodontic Society, Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Association, and the Glen Carbon/Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Kellerman and team are known for higher levels of service and patient care and for utilizing advanced technologies in treatments. He also participates in community projects and believes in giving back to the community that he serves.
