If you have diabetes, there are specific things that you should be aware of to protect your oral health. At Kellerman Dental, our Glen Carbon dentist will talk to you about problems you may face with your oral health if you have diabetes.
When you come to our practice to see our Glen Carbon dentist, you will either be seen by Dr. Kellerman or Dr. Mahassak. We see several patients who have diabetes and help them have excellent oral health despite their diabetes. When a patient has diabetes, it is essential to take special care of your teeth and gums. Of course, keeping your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible will help your teeth and gums to stay healthy.
Patients with diabetes are at higher risk for developing a dry mouth, which can cause mouth sores, ulcers, infections, and tooth decay. Diabetes can also cause you to have inflammation in your gums. If you have diabetes, you may also be more likely to take antibiotics, which can cause you to get thrush, a fungal infection that occurs on the mouth and tongue.
Excellent oral health, and periodic dental exams and cleanings, can help you avoid many of these oral health problems. You want to be sure to brush your teeth after every meal. When brushing, wait at least 30 minutes after eating to protect your tooth enamel, which may have softened by the acid in the food. Always brush your teeth with a toothbrush that has a soft bristle; this will help to protect your gums, as well. You will also need to floss at least once a day. Using an antiseptic mouthwash daily will be helpful, as well.
If you wear dentures, never sleep in them, and always be sure to remove them and clean them daily.
