Is Dental Insurance Really “Insurance”?
If you’ve ever used dental insurance, you know that it’s not used like most insurance programs. When you think of your car, homeowners, or life insurance, you pay only a small premium compared to your possible claims. But you (hopefully) go years or even a lifetime without filing a claim.
That is the real intent of insurance – to cover the risk of extraordinary costs when something unexpected happens. Traditional dental insurance doesn’t follow this model; however – you are typically paying relatively high premiums with full acknowledgment that you will get services regularly.
For this reason, many patients find that dental insurance programs aren’t that cost-effective when you do the math, mainly when they impose limitations on your provider or eligible services. Of course, many do not have access to dental insurance programs at all. In both cases, a dental savings plan may be a great option.

Dr. Kevin Kellerman is an alumnus of Pinckneyville Community High School, Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and SIUE School of Dental Medicine from where he obtained his doctorate.
A full-time dental practitioner, he also lectures on various topics. He is affiliated with many professional bodies including the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Orthodontic Society, Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Association, and the Glen Carbon/Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Kellerman and team are known for higher levels of service and patient care and for utilizing advanced technologies in treatments. He also participates in community projects and believes in giving back to the community that he serves.
